Naas Foods Origins & Leadership
Stevie Dennis and Jordan White are the leadership duo behind Naas Foods. The pair have been best friends since 2016 when they met guiding at a remote wilderness lodge. They connected instantly, sharing a passion for the ocean, sustainability and a good laugh.
Both living in Tofino, BC, they developed Keltsmaht Kelp in 2019 with a mission to bring the natural benefits of kelp into everyday life.
Stevie is of the Keltsmaht people. The Keltsmaht hahouthlee (territory) once spread from Warn Bay out to Vargas Island and down past Long Beach to neighbouring the Toquaht Nation (Barkey Sound).
In the early 1800s, Keltsmaht, along with Quatsiaht, joined the Ahousaht Nation for support in a war against the Otsoaht Nation (of what is now Bedwell Sound). During the long war between these nations (stories report up to 500 years), the son of the Manhousaht Chief was caught hiding the warriors of Otsoaht. The three nations, Ahousaht, Keltsmaht and Quatsiaht, beheaded the Otsoaht warriers and the Manhousaht Chief’s son.
When the Manhousaht Chief denied Manhousaht’s involvement and the other nations presented the heads and Manhousaht surrounded immediately. Manhousaht and Otosaht are no longer recognized as nations. The Keltsmaht and Quatsiaht nations remain recognized within the Ahousaht Nation.
Today, the Keltsmaht Hahouthlee is located on the eastern side of Vargas Island!
